Classical Yoga
Classical yoga draws on the teaching of Patanjali and his famous work with the Yoga Sutras, which defines the eight limbs of Yoga as a complete life work.
Patanjali is considered the father of yoga it is estimated the sutras were written approximately 2,500 years ago. The best known is perhaps the second yogascittavrittinirodha that translates as "yoga is slowing down the thought waves of the mind to a stop" making it clear Yoga (which translates as union) is a meditative discipline.
What most of us know yoga to be is called Hatha yoga, the physical postures or asanas and it is one of the eight limbs of yoga (or astangayoga) The eight limbs include: Yama, behavioral discipline, Niyama, personal discipline, Asana, hatha Yoga postures, Pranayama, controlled breathing, Pratyahara, mindfulness, Dharana, contemplation, Dhyana, meditation and Samadhi, transformed awareness.
